Philip Rosenthal was seventeen years old when he left for America and went from dishwasher to porcelain seller. When he returned to Germany in 1879, he was full of energy and founded his own company, setting up a porcelain painting factory in Erkersroit Castle in Zelb. After his initial commercial success, Philip Rosenthal decided in 1891 to produce his own porcelain. The new porcelain factory attracted attention with its technical progress and modern design, because the deep-thinking founder of the company was always looking for new ideas. In 1961, Philip Rosenthal created the Rosenthal Studio line and began production. Long before design became fashionable, Rosenthal had worked with contemporary artists, designers, and architects, including such well-known names as Raymond Levi, Walter Gropius, Tapio Virkkala, and Sebastian Herkner.
